Moringa Kernels are found inside Moringa seeds and they are highly sought after due to the fact that they are among the most nutritious organic products available. The Moringa seeds grow inside of large pods that grow from the Moringa Oleifera tree.

We visited number of ODC drumstick farms located in different states of India, from these farms we brought 45 samples and planted in our own farm in 2012. It is a pureline selection developed by continuous selfing for six generations. . It was released in the year 2017. In each generation, we observed different characteristic of plants i.e. flowering season, fertilizer application, water requirement, fruit set, taste, size, weight and yield but only desirable characters are selected and advance

Features:
1. The fruits are fleshy and tasty. 
2. It comes to flowering within 3-4 months of sowing and comes to harvest in 6 months. 
3. The plants grow to a height of 8 – 10 feet in a year and produce 6-10 primary branches.

5. The pods are 2 feet to 2.5 feet long with a girth of 2.5 inch and weigh 70 to 80 grams with 80 % flesh.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MORINGA SEEDS PKM 1 AND PKM 2​

PKM – 1 Plants grow to a height of 4-6 m and come to flower in 90-100 days after planting. The first harvest starts 160-170 days after planting and on an average each tree bears 200-225 fruits / year. Pods are 65-70 cm long with 6.3 cm girth and 150 g weight. Fruits are green coloured and highly pulpy.

PKM-2is an improvement over PKM-1. PKM-2 has more lateral branching (desireable for more leaf producting within hands reach) and a seedpod with more flesh than seeds.

PKM-2Moringa, the new variety has recorded an average production of 98 tonnes per hectare. It produces long pods of about 125-130 cm with a girth of 8.40 cm. On an average each of these pods weigh about 280 g. The pods are fleshy with good cooking quality. On cooking, the flesh turns soft and delicious with less fibre, according to the scientists, who developed this variety.

The new annual moringa has yielded 9.18 per cent more fruits per tree than the ruling variety PKM-1. In terms of weight of pods it has recorded a production of 71.58 per cent more than PKM-1. The variety flowers in about 110 days, and the first harvest of fruits can be had between 170 and 180 days after sowing. The trees will continue to yield fruits for the next four months. The total duration of the crop from seed to seed is ranges from 210 to 240 days.

Each tree will yield an average 220 fruits weighing about 61.65 kg in a year. Occasionally, the branches break off due to the heavy weight of the pods. Farmers who have seen its performance over the existing varieties prefer this variety. Cultivation of Moringa seeds PKM 1 and  PKM 2

Soil 
Annual moringa comes up well in a wide range of soil.  A deep sandy loam soil with a pH of 6.5 – 8 is ideal for cultivating this crop.

Season 
Planting is done during July – October INDIA

Seed Rate 
500 g/ha of seeds are required. Sow two seeds per pit at a depth of 2.5-3.0 cm. The seeds can also be sown in the poly bags containing pot mixture and transplanted after 35 -40 days of sowing.

Preparatory cultivation 
Dig pits of size 45 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm with a spacing of 2.0 - 2.5 m either way. Apply 15 kg of compost or FYM/pit after mixing with top soil.

For PKM-2, the closest spacing of 1.2 x 1.2 m is ideal to obtain the highest yield of 138 t/ha. The pinching of main shoots on 80th day after sowing will also help register the highest yield of fruits.

After cultivation 
Gap filling may be done within a month. Pinch off the seedlings when they are about 75 cm in height to facilitate more branching. Short duration vegetables like Cowpea, Bhendi and Tomato can be grown as intercrop.

For perennial moringa, medium pruning of shoots at 70 cm from the tip has to be followed to regulate flowering and obtain the highest yield of 37 kg/ tree.

Irrigation 
Irrigate before sowing and on the 3rd day after sowing and subsequently at 10 – 15 days interval according to soil type.

Yield 
50 - 55 tonnes of pods/ha (220 pods/tree/year).
